Colour that stays rich while skin stays kind.

Short answer

ASTIA is Fujifilm’s soft-contrast colour look. Saturation stays close to PROVIA, but skin tones are pulled gently toward warmth and shadows open up. It is the easiest simulation to use on people without any tuning.

ASTIA is the one most Fujifilm owners skip, because the menu calls it Soft and soft sounds like weak. It is not weak. Astia 100F was the slide film wedding and fashion photographers used when Velvia was too brutal and Provia too plain, and the digital version keeps that job.

ASTIA versus PROVIA

Side by side, the difference is in the tone curve rather than the colour. ASTIA lifts the shadows slightly and softens the roll into the highlights. Faces gain a little warmth, reds are held back so lips and cheeks do not shout, and blues stay strong.

The result is a picture with plenty of colour that never feels aggressive. On a portrait, PROVIA can look clinical and Velvia looks angry. ASTIA looks like someone lit the scene well.

What it is best at

People, first. Any situation with faces in mixed light — family days, restaurants, backstage, indoor events — benefits from a simulation that keeps shadows open.

It is also strong for anything soft and pale: flowers, food on a light table, white and cream interiors, misty coastlines. Where Velvia would crush the delicacy out of a pale subject, ASTIA holds the separation between very close tones.

Small tweaks that help

ASTIA can look slightly flat in dull weather. Shadow +1 puts the backbone back without touching skin tones.

For a warmer, gentler version that suits golden hour, add a white balance shift of about R +2, B −2. For a cleaner studio look, leave white balance alone and drop Colour to −1.

Common questions

Is ASTIA just PROVIA with lower contrast?

No. The shadow and highlight handling differs, and reds are treated differently so skin stays gentle. Turning PROVIA’s contrast down gives a flatter picture, not the same picture.

Does ASTIA work for landscapes?

It works well in soft light, mist and pale coastal scenes. For deep forest or autumn colour, Velvia or Classic Chrome will serve you better.
