Short answer
The X-M1 was Fujifilm’s first X-mount camera without a viewfinder, using the original 16.3MP X-Trans sensor in a 330g body with a tilting screen. It has 10 film simulations and no Classic Chrome.
The X-M1 is the camera the X-M5 is named after, eleven years apart. It took the X-Pro1 sensor, removed the viewfinder and the hybrid finder complexity, and produced the smallest X-mount body Fujifilm had made.

The idea
Give people the X-Trans sensor and the film simulations without the price of a viewfinder. The tilting screen made waist-level shooting easy, and at 330 grams it was genuinely pocketable with the 27mm pancake.
The same argument produced the X-M5 in 2024, which is a far better camera built on an identical premise.
Buying one now
Only if it is very cheap. Autofocus is first-generation and slow, there is no Classic Chrome, and the control layout uses two unmarked dials instead of dedicated ones.
The image quality holds up. Everything around it does not.

Verdict
