Short answer
The X-E5 is a rangefinder-style body with a 40.2MP sensor, seven-stop IBIS and a corner-mounted viewfinder. It has all 20 film simulations. It is the X100VI’s sensor in a body that takes interchangeable lenses.
The X-E line was quiet for four years and came back in August 2025 with the specification people had been asking for. The X-E5 is the flattest camera Fujifilm makes with stabilisation inside, and the viewfinder in the corner means your right eye is never blocked by the body.

Why the shape matters
A corner viewfinder is not nostalgia. With the finder at the left edge, your face sits beside the camera rather than behind it, and your other eye stays open on the scene. For street photography that changes how you time a frame.
At 39.1mm deep it is also genuinely flat. With a pancake lens it goes in a jacket pocket, which is the difference between a camera you own and a camera you carry.
X-E5 or X100VI?
Identical sensor, processor and simulation set. The X100VI has a leaf shutter, a hybrid optical viewfinder and a lens permanently attached. The X-E5 has an electronic-only finder and an X mount.
Buy the X100VI if you want the decision made for you and the flash sync speed that a leaf shutter gives. Buy the X-E5 if you already have lenses, or if 35mm equivalent is not the focal length you shoot.
Where it falls short
The viewfinder is 2.36 million dots, which is the same as the X-T50 and noticeably behind the X-T5. Battery life is 310 frames. There is no weather sealing. And the corner finder means larger lenses block more of the frame when you compose.

Verdict
The X-E5 is the camera for people who wanted an X100VI but not a fixed lens. It gives up the hybrid viewfinder and the leaf shutter, keeps everything else, and is far easier to actually find in stock.
