NOSTALGIC

Nostalgic Neg.

Amber highlights, deep blues, family album warmth.

Short answer

Nostalgic Neg produces amber-tinted highlights, deep blue shadows and soft overall contrast. Fujifilm modelled it on American colour photo books from the 1970s. It is the warmest simulation in the lineup and the friendliest for family photos.

Nostalgic Neg arrived on the X-H2S in 2022 and is the only simulation Fujifilm based on printed photographs rather than film. The reference was the New Colour movement of 1970s America — Eggleston, Shore, that whole warm and slightly melancholy visual world.

The look in one paragraph

Highlights carry amber. Shadows carry blue. Between them, contrast is gentle and colour is rich without being loud. Skin comes out warm and a little soft, and any warm light source — a lamp, late sun, a sodium street light — gets exaggerated in a pleasing way.

Because both ends of the tone curve are tinted, the picture reads as a print rather than a file. That is exactly what Fujifilm was after.

When to use it

Golden hour is the obvious answer, and it is right. But Nostalgic Neg is at its most interesting indoors under warm artificial light, where other simulations fight the colour cast and this one leans into it.

It is also the best choice for photographs you want to feel old immediately: family gatherings, kids, holidays, anything you are shooting because you want to remember it rather than because it looks striking.

What to watch out for

In cool blue light — overcast winter, deep shade, blue hour — Nostalgic Neg can look muddy, because the amber it adds has nothing to sit on. Use Classic Chrome there instead.

The highlight tint also means white things are rarely white. If you are photographing a product, a document or anything where colour accuracy matters, this is the wrong tool.

Because it is a soft profile, it takes Grain: Weak, Large particularly well. Large grain on a soft profile reads as film; on a hard profile it reads as noise.

Common questions

Which cameras have Nostalgic Neg?

X-H2S, X-H2, X-T5, X-S20, X-T50, X100VI, X-M5, X-E5, X-T30 III and the GFX 100 II family. Earlier X-Trans IV bodies did not get it.

Is Nostalgic Neg good for street photography?

It can be, in warm light. In grey urban light it usually loses to Classic Chrome or Classic Negative, which have somewhere to take a colourless scene.
