Fujifilm GFX100RF

The GFX100RF is what happens when someone asks for an X100 with a medium format sensor. It is 735 grams, which sounds heavy until you compare it with a GFX100S II plus a lens, and it is the first medium format camera you can honestly call a walking-around camera.

The f/4 lens, and why

f/4 on medium format gives roughly the depth of field of f/3.2 on full frame, so the shallow rendering people buy GFX for is still there. Going faster would have meant a much larger lens, and the whole point of this camera is that it is not large.

It is a leaf shutter, which means flash sync at any speed and near-silent operation. That is a genuine professional advantage, not a footnote.

No stabilisation, and what that means

There is no IBIS, which on a 102MP sensor is a real constraint: camera shake shows at pixel level long before it shows on a 26MP file. Plan for 1/125 second or faster hand-held, or use a support.

Fujifilm’s reasoning is space. Adding a stabiliser to a sensor this size would have made the body thicker than the camera it was trying to be.

Who it is for

Photographers who already understand medium format and want it on the street or on holiday. Documentary and travel work where file quality matters and a bag full of lenses does not.

It is a poor first medium format camera. Learn the format on a GFX100S II with two lenses before spending nearly five thousand dollars on a fixed 28mm view.
