Short answer
The GFX100S put the GFX100’s 102MP sensor into a body the size of a professional full-frame camera, at $5,999 instead of $10,000. It has in-body stabilisation, dual SD slots and 18 film simulations.
The original GFX100 was enormous and cost ten thousand dollars. The GFX100S kept the sensor, removed the integrated vertical grip and cut the price by four thousand, which is the single biggest change in the history of the format.

What it changed
At 900 grams with a normal grip and two ordinary SD cards, it stopped being a studio-only camera. The stabiliser makes hand-held medium format practical, which sounds like marketing until you shoot a 102MP file at 1/15 second and it is sharp.
Autofocus is contrast-and-phase hybrid and slower than any X Series body, but it is enough for portraits and landscape.
GFX100S or GFX100S II?
The S II adds the X-Processor 5, faster autofocus with subject detection, eight stops of stabilisation instead of six, and a better viewfinder. The sensor resolution is identical.
Used, the original GFX100S is often thousands cheaper. For landscape and studio work where nothing moves, it takes the same picture.

Verdict
The GFX100S is the used bargain in medium format. If your subjects hold still, it does everything the newer S II does for considerably less.

No. It has 18 simulations. REALA ACE arrived with the GFX100 II in 2023.
Is 102MP overkill?
For screens, yes. For large prints, commercial retouching and heavy cropping, it is the reason to own the camera.
