Fujifilm X-A2

The cheapest entry into the X mount, and it shows.

FUJIFILM X-A2

Short answer

The X-A2 is a 16.3MP Bayer-sensor entry camera with a tilting screen and no viewfinder. It has 10 film simulations, contrast-detect autofocus and 1080p video. It is the cheapest way to get onto the X mount.

The X-A2 exists to be inexpensive. It added a screen that tilts up 175 degrees and improved macro focusing over the X-A1, and beyond that it is a simple camera that takes X-mount lenses.

What you actually get

A 16.3MP APS-C sensor, Fujifilm colour science and the ability to mount any X lens. That last point is the real argument: if you already own X-mount glass, an X-A2 is a very cheap second body.

There is no viewfinder, no ACROS and no 4K. Autofocus is contrast-detect and slow.

Better options at similar prices

A used X-E2 gives you an X-Trans sensor, a viewfinder and Classic Chrome for a similar amount. An X-M1 gives you X-Trans without the viewfinder.

Buy the X-A2 only if it is bundled with a lens you want at a price that makes the body effectively free.

What is good

  • Cheapest route onto the X mount
Tilting screen and light body
Full Fujifilm colour simulations
Takes any X-mount lens

What is not

  • 16MP Bayer sensor, no ACROS
No viewfinder and slow autofocus
Better used options at the same price

Verdict

The X-A2 is only worth buying as part of a cheap lens bundle. For the same money a used X-E2 is a much better camera.

Common questions

Does the X-A2 have Classic Chrome?

It shipped without it. Check the firmware version on any used body, as later updates changed what was available.

Is 16MP enough on a Bayer sensor?

For screens and small prints, yes. There is less detail than a 16MP X-Trans file because of the low-pass filter.
