The last X100 with a fixed screen, and the cheapest good one.

Short answer

The X100F is the fourth-generation X100: 24.3MP, X-Processor Pro, a hybrid viewfinder and a fixed rear screen. It has 15 film simulations including ACROS but not Classic Negative. Used, it is the cheapest X100 worth owning.

The X100F was the version that got the controls right. It moved the ISO dial into the shutter speed dial, added a focus joystick and doubled the resolution of the original design. What it did not get was the new lens, and that is the whole trade.

What it does well

ACROS. The X100F was the first X100 with Fujifilm’s premium black and white simulation, and on a 24MP X-Trans III sensor it still looks superb. Classic Chrome is here too.

The controls are arguably better than the V’s: the joystick, the combined ISO and shutter dial, and a body that is slightly thinner because the screen does not tilt.

What it lacks

The old lens design, which goes soft at f/2 near minimum focus. It is not a flaw for street photography at three metres; it is a real limit for close portraits and food.

No Classic Negative, no ETERNA, no weather sealing even with an adapter, no tilting screen, and video that stops at 1080p.

Verdict

If the X100V is out of budget, the X100F is the one to buy. Accept that f/2 close-up is soft, shoot it at f/4, and you have most of the X100 experience for a fraction of the price.
