Bleach Bypass is the most extreme simulation Fujifilm makes and the one most people try once and abandon. It clips constantly at default settings. This recipe spends most of its adjustments simply keeping it in range.
Keeping it in range
DR400 and Highlight −2 together are not optional. Bleach Bypass raises contrast hard, and without both of these a wet road or a white sky goes to pure white within half a stop.
Colour +2 looks contradictory on a near-monochrome look. It is what keeps skin from turning grey. Without it, people in the frame look ill rather than atmospheric.
What to point it at
Wet tarmac. Bridges. Scaffolding. Industrial estates. Winter cities. Anything where the surfaces are hard and the light is flat.
Locking white balance to 5000K with a blue shift keeps the metallic cast consistent. Auto white balance would keep trying to warm it back to neutral, which is the one thing this recipe does not want.

Common questions
Why DR400 and not DR200?
DR400 gives two stops of highlight protection instead of one, at the cost of a higher base ISO. On this simulation you need every bit of it.
Can I shoot people with this?
You can, in an industrial or documentary context. Do not use it for anyone who expects to look good.
